Short Film Review: Espelho Meu a.k.a. Mirror, Mirror (2026) Duration: 5 min 55 sec

A new bite-sized horror short from filmmaker David E. Teixeira, Espelho Meu (Mirror, Mirror in English) stars Catarina Carvalho as a one-woman show playing both sides of a sinister supernatural mirror. The film is Portuguese in origin but language won’t be a barrier as it is entirely dialogue free, instead relying on Carvalho’s expressive face to guide the narrative. The story is simple and concise and able to fit within the short runtime without feeling unfinished. Given all the self-imposed restrictions they were working with it’s impressive what Teixeira and Carvalho are able to pull off. There’s quite a few interesting touches here, from the sound that the dark version of Carvalho’s black, pointy fingers make as she drums them ominously, to the creative use of red and blue lighting. Whether or not this is intended as a subtle homage to Argento, it adds a dynamic and otherworldly quality to the scenes and works effectively to guide the story without the need for spoken words. At times, the way the characters are presented and exist in the space together feels like it could have been sharpened up a little to create a more clear and definitive delineation but overall this is a great example of an interesting idea well told.
